COPING WITH HEREDITARY HEARING LOSS

 

Heredity hearing loss can be a threatening prospect since you do not have much control over the genes you are given. However, there are many devices available on the market you can use to conquer your fears and thus lead a successful life despite not being able to hear naturally.          

 

There are unfortunately many conditions and gene mutations that can cause hereditary hearing loss.  The chances of passing on some mutations are higher than others and it depends on how strong a gene is present in the blood line to determine if you or your child has a high risk factor.  Although there are many conditions of genetic origin that can be passed on, such as hereditary asthma, cholesterol problems and obesity, these conditions are often controllable with nutrition and medications. But hereditary hearing loss is not so easily prevented or controlled.

 

If you have received genetic counseling and learned that hearing loss it is a very possible condition for your children, you should not feel isolated or worried for your children’s future. There are many assistive programs available that can help your children live a normal life should they inherit hearing loss.  You may want to look into amplifiers and devices that will help your child and yourself learn to live with hereditary hearing loss.  Amplifiers depending on their design, usually work to enhance residual hearing making hearing loss much more manageable.

 

If you know that hereditary hearing loss is highly present in you or your family, you should take measures to be prepared for any future members of your family suffer from hereditary hearing loss.   For instance, if you have autoimmune hearing loss in your family, then you know that the potential of this same condition exists for you and your descendents.  If you know and can recognize the symptoms of tinnitus and vertigo that accompany autoimmune hearing loss, you may be able to seek treatment quicker and possible lessen its severity.  If you are aware of your potential for hereditary hearing loss, you may want to consult your doctor about start steroid treatment sooner, which is the number one way treatment to limit and possibly reverse this form of hearing loss.

 

With the many hearing aids and devices available there are plenty of avenues you can use to continue life as normal.  If you make sure you understand and are aware of the various devices on the market then battling hereditary hearing loss will become much easier for you.  There is no reason why you should fear the onset of hereditary hearing loss, but rather embrace it as a challenge you can overcome with the many tools at your disposal.
